A Considered Response to a Heritage Site
The church sits on a significant heritage site, and the project has been approached with that significance in mind throughout. Rather than treating heritage constraints as an obstacle to be minimised, the design works with the existing fabric of the building, respecting its heritage character while addressing the practical shortcomings that have built up over time.
Addressing a Complex Brief
The brief brought together a genuinely complex matrix of issues: heritage constraints sitting alongside poor access and a weak address to the street; facilities in need of modernising, including a rear hall requiring renewal and acoustic treatment throughout; and a desire to open the building’s facade outward, with a covered porch and outdoor gathering areas giving the church a more welcoming presence. Practical requirements ran alongside these — compliant toilet numbers and a creche among them — each needing to be resolved without compromising the heritage setting.
