The work I choose to take on

I’ve practised as an architect for twenty-five years, most of that with an internationally recognised firm, working across nearly every typology and scale — from major public and commercial work to the fine detail of a single room. That range taught me something a narrower path wouldn’t have: how to read a problem before proposing an answer, and how to find the move that unlocks a difficult site, a tight budget or a brief pulling in three directions at once.

Chung Architects today is smaller by design — built around the work I choose to take on rather than the work that comes by default. Every project gets the attention that’s hard to give at volume, and it gets it from me directly. The focus now sits in three areas: renewal projects for church communities, bespoke homes, and boutique commercial spaces.

Renewal work that a congregation can get behind

I’ve worked with churches in a number of capacities over the years — as an architect, and also on parish council and as warden for property matters. That combination matters more than it might sound. It means I understand how a congregation actually reaches a decision, why these projects so often stall, and what it takes to move a committee from a wishlist to a direction everyone can stand behind.

Church renewal asks for design strategy, not just drawings: the ability to separate the stated problem from the real one, to hold heritage, budget and mission together, and to give a community a vision concrete enough to respond to. It also asks for patience. I work at the pace a congregation genuinely needs, plainly and without jargon, and I keep both halves of the question in view — the roof that needs replacing and the ambition for a more welcoming entry are decided by the same people, out of the same budget, in the same conversation.

Every project starts with an idea

Design excellence here is a matter of attention, not scale. A church renewal, a private home, a boutique commercial fit-out — each gets the same close reading of site, brief and use, and the same detail carried from concept through to completion.

I’m a multidisciplinary designer, and I think in concepts before I think in plans. The strongest projects I’ve worked on all began with a single clear idea that made sense of everything else — how people move through the building, how light arrives, what the place is for. Getting to that idea is the work. Everything after it is craft.

What it's like to work with me

Collaboration starts with listening — understanding what sits behind a brief, not just what’s written in it. Functional requirements are rarely handed over complete; drawing them out, testing them against site constraints and reflecting them back is often where a project either finds its footing or quietly heads the wrong way.

From there I stay closely involved: through budget, through site conditions, through the practical realities that shape a project as it develops. Good design comes from a working relationship built on trust and honest conversation, carried through to completion — not from a fixed vision handed over and left alone.

Underneath all of it is a simple question I keep asking: what does this add? To the people who’ll use the building every week, and to the community around it.
