Adaptive Reuse - Burwood Civic Historical Building
As advocates of heritage architecture Sydney, Chung Architects were tasked with designing modern health facilities and cafe in a significant listed heritage item.
This project is an alterations and additions to a heritage building by former Government Architect Walter Liberty Vernon. The building was originally designed and used as a Police Station and Courthouse in the late 1800’s. In its current form it is in a state of disrepair and needing updates for amenity, compliance and accessibility.

The Police Station and Courthouse are occupying either corners of the site and different levels. The proposal seeks to connect the two buildings via a glazed and recessive pavilion that provides connection and accessible movement between the two. The functions of the proposal are a new cafe, meeting and presentation space, as well as reception and treatment spaces for an Orthodontic Practice.

The proposal draws reference from the significant sandstone arched openings on the verandah and integrating them into a vaulted ceiling that defines the cafe space, and forms related ceiling treatments in the reception and treatment areas. The proposal reveals the heritage nature of the original building and also adds community amenity and functionality via the modern treatment spaces.
